It's configurable in that you can reformat your drive to use the
case-sensitive variant of the file system and then
rebuild/restore/reinstall from scratch.
From use, the default filesystem preserves the case of filenames
such that if you copy files with varied case names to another
filesystem that is case-sensitive, you'll get the correct names
(e.g., foo, BaR, and baZ will show up as expected) but if you copy
files from a case-sensitive filesystem with the same names except
for case (e.g., foo, Foo, and FOO), you'll find that you'll only
have the first one, but that the contents will be the same as the
last file to have been copied (i.e., you'll have foo, but it
contain whatever FOO contained on the other machine).
(For added fun, some sloppily coded apps break if you switch to a
case-sensitive file system (e.g., Office, Adobe apps).)
