Off topic, but I would certainly recommend GNU Lilypond
(gnu.org/software/lilypond) to anyone who wants to typeset music, as
opposed to playing around with software :).  Even though they don't use
TeX any more.  Werner Lemberg discussed that a bit in his interview,
http://tug.org/interviews/lemberg.html.

I don't know if there are things musixtex can do that lilypond cannot,
but lilypond is *extremely* capable (and actively maintained).
