As I thought ... but I cannot reproduce it here on linux
even with \ embedded. Strange.

Can you try the following: Instead of the eval "END line .. insert:

	eval "END { unlink(\'$outfn\') if (-r \'$outfn\') ; }";

So the escaped " are changed to '

Then rerun tests, please ...
