Andreas' response reminds me to add one more comment. While the TeX Live Unix Install Script will default to the legacy binaries on Sierra, this script allows users to install more than one set of binaries. So it is easy to also install the x86_64-darwin binaries. Both sets of binaries are included on the DVD, so Mac users who install using the DVD have easy access to both sets of binaries.
