I'm doing a manual with two columns of text, but have large pictures
that go on a page in one-column mode. I made a mistake before. This
is what i tried:

\twocolumn
\onecolumn{
   <text 1...>
}
<text 2...>

and:

\twocolumn
\begin{onecolumn}
   <text 1...>
\end{onecolumn}
<text 2...>

but in both cases, text-2 is done in one-column mode
when i want two columns.
