[texhax] dot-below accent in math mode

I did not occur to me to put $'s within the { ... }
following \d.  So I got a missing $ error.

A \show\d ...

 > \d=macro:
#1->{\o at lign {\relax #1\crcr \hidewidth \sh at ft {-1ex}.\hidewidth }}.

shows me that this is no ordinary accent macro, and it does
implicitly take us out of math mode.
