[texhax] switching cite from [n] to superscript and back?

I thought I'd seen this in the texhax mail, but can't find it in my file, or
in the books, or in FAQ.

The journal for which I'm preparing a manuscript requires that
I cite articles with a superscript numeral, but when cited articles are
refered to in the text they need to appear as bracketed
numbers on line, e.g., in ref. [10].  Can this be accomplished in any way,
hopefully relatively painless?
