Unfortunately, there's a bit of a void between introductory Latex, and 
the hard-core stuff (source2e.*). You'll need to get some plain tex 
under your belt though, so Gentle.tex, the newly re-released TeX for 
the Impatient and TeX by Topic will help a lot.

Looking at the source of well-documented packages like memoir and 
booktabs is instructive as well though, and there are some useful Latex 
docs at the latex project site, http://www.latex-project.org/ of 
especial interest are:
