    Is there some way to enjoy
    both the resources of pdflatex *and* pstricks?

Fundamentally, no.  pstricks requires full PostScript, which is
precisely what PDF was designed to avoid.

One workaround is pdftricks (see CTAN), it requires allowing subprocess
execution in the TeX configuration.

See also the purifyeps package.  I haven't looked at that.
