[texhax] Transparency via \includegraphics?

Any good reason why \includegraphics does not recongnize transparencies?

Example: png via pdftex.
Project: set an image with transp. background over gray page w/o 
getting a white surrounding rectangle.  (And without modifying the 
source image.)
