[texhax] The minimum one needs to write a book?

Hi guys,

I'm new to this group and LaTeX. I need to write a long document with
lots of formulas. The structure of my book is as follows,

Table of Contents
Preface
Chapter 1
Chapter 2
...
References

If possible, can I have `Preface' and `Chapters' in separate files?
