[texhax] LaTeX floats and memoir

Hello all:

The float.sty package does not work with the memoir class.  Using the
memoir class, does anyone know some other way to achieve the
functionality of float's [H] directive: "put the float right here, and
start a new page if you need to."  So far as I can tell, memoir seems
not to have that built in.

What I need is no floating, but I also need captions and cross
references.  If there's an easy way get the captions without the
floating, I'd very much like to know about it.  (The FAQ recommends
float.sty for this.)
