    How can I turn off the warnings?  

To turn off overfull hbox warnings (and black boxes being printed), with
no change in behavior:
\hfuzz=\maxdimen

To turn off *under*full hbox warnings (no change in behavior):
\hbadness=10000

To turn off underfull vbox warnings (ditto):
\vbadness=10000

\tolerance does indeed change line breaking.  In your case, that's not
the thing to adjust.

If unwanted output remains, please post it ...
