[texhax] Font Encoding Question

The following document produces two greater than signs that are  
*very* close to one another.  In fact, it looks like a single  
character.  If I comment out \usepackage[T1]{fontenc}, I get the  
output I expect.


\documentclass{article}
\usepackage[T1]{fontenc}
\begin{document}
\texttt{>>}
\end{document}

Why does this happen?  Am I wrong to expect the output to be the same  
in both cases?  Most importantly, how do I get the output I expect  
while using the T1 encoding?
