[texhax] dvipdf and xpdf

Dear All,

Apologies if anyone considers this OT.  It's at least obliquely
TeX-related.

For some while now, I've noticed that, if I try to scroll through a
(LaTeX-generated) file in xpdf while dvipdf is recreating the file,
xpdf exits - which closes not only the file being regenerated, but any
other files I have open in separate windows in the same copy of xpdf.

Today, I finally managed to capture the error message xpdf produces:

Error (49663): Illegal character '>'
Error (49633): Illegal character '>'
Error (49663): Illegal character '>'
Error (49633): Illegal character '>'

[1]    Segmentation fault            xpdf filename.pdf

Any ideas if there's anything I can do about this, please?
