Yes, apologies. It's all explained in section 5.4.1.2 of the TeXInfo
pages for AucTeX. It's not entirely easy to reproduce, firstly
because it depends on the options given to \usepackage{babel}, and
secondly because there's a filename-dependence - e.g. try calling
Philipp's minimal example "index.tex": AucTeX then doesn't do the
hyphen conversion; whereas it does if you call the file "ondex.tex".
That explains why I haven't seen it before: I call most of my
hand-edited LaTeX documents "index.tex".
