Alternative:
\begin{inparaenum}[(\itshape a\upshape)]
This would use italic ``numerals'' in upright parenthesis.
but what if this is embedded in an italic
environment, such as a theorem?
my preference would be for the parens to
be upright, and i'm not sure about the
indices. but this would handle that
worst case with a bit of overkill:
\begin{inparaenum}[{\upshape(}\emph{a}{\upshape)}]
-- bb
