There is also
LaTeX: A Document Preparation System, ISBN-13: 978-0201529838
by Lesly Lamport. It desribes the basics. The LaTeX Companion only
explains the extensions but not the basics.
IMO, Lamport's book is a very good entry point for beginners.
The only thing it lacks is a pointer to amsmath, which IMO is
essential. But fortunately we can run
texdoc amsmath
on the command line nowadays in order to get its documentation.
As far as lshort is concerned, maybe the English version is usable.
All the translations are utterly flawed and out-of-date and should be
avoided.

Reinhard

Microsoft isn't the answer. Microsoft is the question, and the answer is NO.
