Yes, frequently. (Well, actually, I use pdfTeX, but I can't imagine that
LaTeX should be any different from plain TeX insofar as this issue is
concerned.)

Nope, never. I've published several dozen books (if one includes different
editions of the same book) through Lulu. Never had a problem with fonts.
I typically use Latin Modern fonts, but I've used others. I doubt that I've
ever used any TrueType fonts, though.

Frankly, neither can I. If it's embedded, then it seems to me (someone will
doubtless correct me if I'm wrong) that all the information needed to print
the glyphs should be present in the file.
My experience is that Lulu tech support is typically both slow and
hopeless, but you could try them. Perhaps they've improved.
