Are the item numbers explicit (i.e., tagged) or implicit (e.g.,
generated by a \itemize environment or whatever) ?  If explicit,
try wrapping in :

	\leavevmode \llap {\hbox to <whatever> {\itemnumber \hfil}}

If implicit, you will need to read the documentation and/or code
for whatever generates them.
