Well, as far as I understand, this additional space is customary in the UK and 
the US, but it is not customary in France (thus the naming of \frenchspacing), 
and as far as I know it is not customary in Germany. So although I understand 
its reasoning, it will disturb German or French readers (assuming they are not 
yet too used to badly-typeset texts). For me, that is a perfect reason to want 
to remove the additional space at end-of-sentence.
