[texhax] quick question

I have just installed texlive 2017 and it basically is working fine.
However,
I do not have the assistance/directory files setup.   I seem to recall such
a request by the install-tl script but can find not such request in the
install.log.   I have a few files in my home directory folder TEX
that I would like to be able to access without copying them all over the
place!

Suggestions please.
