For the first time in TUG conference history, we had a virtual live presentation given by Gerben Wierda on a G4 Quicksilver in the Netherlands using Timbuktu to remotely access a 17 inch Powerbook connected to the projector. The presentation was made using iChatAV software and iSight (camera and microphone) in Hawaii and a camcorder (in the Netherlands),
Gerben demonstrated how to install TeX using his iInstaller and the audience followed the steps on iBooks provided by Apple Computer Inc.
The second highlight of the day was the presentation by Richard Koch on The New Features of TeXShop Our congratulations to Dick, who was a recipient winner of an Apple Design Award 2003 for the Best Mac OS X Open Source Port: TeXShop 1.19.
These two presentations showed how easy it is to install and use TeX on Mac OS X and with the available templates and menu functions available in TeXShop typesetting with TeX, pdfTeX, LaTeX and ConTeXt is no longer a big challenge. The power is in the hands of the user.
Apple Computer Inc. sponsored the loan of 23 iBooks and two BigAl G4/17iinch powerbooks and three airport extreme base stations which made it possible to have easy internet access to the network and two hands-on workshop. It was the best we have ever had thanks to the support of Apple Computer and Brian Frye, Systems Engineer, who coordinated and set up the network connections.
At the SIG discussion that followed, a MacTeX TUG working group (TWG) was inaugurated to have a forum to discuss issues concerning TeX on the Mac that would benefit the TeX community, and to establish good connections with Apple to foster and promote TeX development which would be of mutual benefit to both Apple and all developers of TeX software for the Mac.
