Using fonts from the Adobe Type Library

with LY1 encoding in (La)TeX

• NOTE:You need the actual font(s). TFM files are not fonts. TFM files without font files are not useful.

• NOTE: Please read this whole page before following the links.

• Click on the first letter of the PS FontName of the font for which you want TFM metric files.
  A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, J, K, L, M, N, O, P, Q, R, S, T, U, V, W, X, Y, Z

• Find the entry for the font for which you need metric files. For example:

  AGaramond-BoldItalic

  gdbi

  AGaraBolIta

  padbi8y

• Click on the Adobe file name (second column, highlighted). This will get you a zip file with TFM files for all fonts with Adobe file names that start with the same letter. UNZIP and discard what you don't need.

• Move the TFM file(s) you need to where your TeX looks for TFM files (TEXFONTS).

• If you use DVIPS, download psfontsa.ly1 - locate the entry corresponding to the font you want to use. E.g.:
  gdbi AGaramond-BoldItalic "TeXnANSIEncoding ReEncodeFont" <texnansi.enc <gdbi____.pfb

  Append this line to your psfonts.map file (or link to it using p+ from your config.ps file).

• If you use DVIPS, download texnansi.enc (zip file) - place it where DVIPS looks for PS prologs.

• If you use OzTeX, download MacLY1.enc - place it where OzTeX looks for PS prologs.

• Download ly1enc.def - place it where TeX looks for inputs (TEXINPUTS).

• Add \usepackage[LY1]{fontenc} between \documentclass{...} and \begin{document} (and before any PSNFSS packages you load).

• There are three conveniently packaged examples complete with the actual fonts right here:

  (279,171 bytes) for the Charter fonts from BitStream.

  (325,619 bytes) for the Utopia fonts from Adobe.

  (313,619 bytes) for the Courier fonts from IBM.

  These include LaTeX 2e PSNFSS files for the fonts contributed by BitStream, Adobe and IBM to the X Consortium. Each zip files is complete with the actual fonts in ATM compatible Adobe Type 1 format, metric files, font definition files, style files, a one page sample, and instructions.

• Support for the 35 standard printer resident fonts using LY1 encoding. Here are TFMs, FDs, STYs -- all you need --- lw35nfsx.zip (164,321 byte zip file). Compare this with the lw35nfss.zip file on CTAN which is over 800,000 bytes using T1, TS1 and VF!
