Classes at Practical TeX 2005

We will offer three classes on the first day of the Practical TeX 2005 conference, at no additional cost. Please sign up on the registration page, so the teachers can plan accordingly.

If you are interested in particular topics being covered, please email us. If you're interested, most likely others are too, and we can probably find a teacher.

Practical TeX on the Web

Peter Flynn, Silmaril Consultants.

Requirements: some knowledge of TeX or LaTeX; familiarity with using the Web; a laptop with a network card (can be supplied on-site).

Synopsis: A one-day course (four sessions, approximately 9am-5pm) on using TeX and LaTeX for creating Web documents. Emphasis is on the techniques for conversion and publishing. Suitable for anyone needing to publish to paper and the Web from a single document source. The course includes practical sessions with some of the software.

1. Making raw TeX, DVI, and PostScript available; assumptions about the user; use of ancillary files; restrictions on fonts; advantages for mathematics; cooperation with server software; Texinfo; linking and indexing;
2. Conversion to HTML; use of formalized structure; LaTeX2HTML; processing requirements; TeX4HT; advantages and restrictions of script-based conversion;
3. Creating PDF; pdfTeX and pdfLaTeX; hyperlinks and relationship to HTML pages; ConTeXt; hyperref; embedded facilities;
4. XML and conversion to HTML and LaTeX, etc; choosing a DTD; DocBook2ConTeXt; native conversion: XSLT and Omnimark; non-native conversion: Perl, Python, Tcl; server-side document management; Coocon and AxKit.

Beginning and Intermediate LaTeX

Requirements: laptop with a network card (can be supplied on-site).

Synopsis: This will follow on to our workshops during the conference: typesetting text, math, advanced math, equations, tables, figures, bibtex, itemizing, enumerating, nesting, and much more. This sample document (pdf output, TeX source, BibTeX source) shows the sorts of features that will be covered.

Attendees may bring specific problems and, time permitting, the instructors will attempt to solve them for the benefit of the whole class.

Introduction to ConTeXt

Steve Peter, Beech Stave Press.

Good working knowledge of TeX and LaTeX. Laptop not required, but useful if available.

An introduction to the ConTeXt format.
